Name: Axel
Age: Around 25
Gender: Male
Living: Originally from Radiant Garden, until recently based at the World That Never Was
Status: Organization
From: Kingdom Hearts
Picture:
Summons: N/A
Magic: He does fire. That means walls of flame, heat waves, hellholes with walls made of fire, the floor is lava and pain and suffering, and pretty much everything having to do with heat and plasma is his to command. As an Organization member he’s also capable of the signature warping shadow portal, but in combat he’s fast enough to teleport, which can be a real annoyance when you’re trying to aim an ice attack. His Nobodies are the Assassins, fittingly enough, which also have the ability to self-destruct in a reckless kamikaze attack—a trait Axel shares, which means it’s possible for the flame to die out. But don’t let the man snap his fingers.
Weapon: Chakrams
Skills: Professional liar and skilled assassin.
Personality: Axel moves like a serpent and he’s about as trustworthy, never short on graceful gesticulations that distract the eye and confuse the heart--assuming his target has one. When he's in his element (the one that isn't fire) he'll usually be talking about this or other "show," and that's because he's manipulative enough to see people that way: as actors in a play with himself in the director's chair. And just because he's not actively involved doesn't mean he can't appreciate someone else's handiwork. But in times of peace, or around people he trusts to some degree, Axel is more laid back. He has a flexible sense of humor, letting a clever word or punchline roll off his tongue without effort but without hesitating to chuckle or full-on belly laugh at his leisure. It's all just an act, as Axel's feeling through memories instead of actual emotions, but Axel is an actor.
History: Axel grew up as Lea, a boy from Radiant Garden who was best friends with a quieter blue-haired boy of the same age by the name of Isa. The two of them briefly encountered Ventus, and he and Lea sparred, but he didn’t leave any lasting impression as far as Lea was concerned and the redhead went on to lose his heart and become Axel, eighth member of the Organization and the Flurry of Dancing Flames. His relationship with Isa, who became the Organization’s Number Seven, Saïx, never exactly waned, but it changed from a friendship to more of a partnership as Axel worked to get Saïx higher into the chain of command. The two worked independently of Marluxia’s similar bid for power, but their motives were never fully revealed.
Ten years passed. The Organization observed Sora’s fall, and in his brief absence a Nobody rose up in front of Twilight Town’s mansion. This Nobody was taken in and placed under Axel’s charge for enough missions to become close to him, and perhaps only because the boy resembled the Ventus of long ago Axel grew close to him in that time. They started sharing ice cream on Twilight Town’s clock tower together, but did so mechanically, without much enjoyment or purpose.
Then Axel was called away to Oblivion. Saïx warned him of traitors to the Organization in their midst, and Axel knew his job was to eliminate them, as well as clear out anyone else in Saïx’s way. He was assigned under Marluxia with Larxene as the topside force, while in the basement Zexion directed Lexaeus and Vexen. Axel faced off against Sora and offered to help him figure things out, which was more likely than not only an offer to confuse him further, but Sora refused, so Axel returned to the upper floors and grew close enough to Larxene and Marluxia to become a part of their plot to puppeteer Sora using Naminé and destroy Xemnas. Meanwhile, Vexen gathered enough data to create a replica of Riku and sent him to attack Sora. When this endeavor failed, Vexen went out to attack Sora himself, and ultimately started talking too much, which made Marluxia give Axel the order to eliminate him. Axel cheekily carried this out, but seemed perturbed afterwards, perhaps troubled by Sora’s reaction to Vexen’s heartless murder. Not long after, Axel was left to guard Naminé and decided that was no fun. He let her go in order to spare Sora. Larxene died as a result, and Axel went down to the basement to gloat to Zexion, who was already bereft of Vexen and Lexaeus both. Marluxia seized Naminé while she was unprotected, so when Axel went to face him and carry out his order to “Eliminate the traitor,” Marluxia used her as a hostage. This made Sora attack Axel first, while Marluxia retreated and tried to get Naminé to erase Sora’s memories. Axel escaped and went below once Marluxia was gone, taking the Riku Replica with him in order to eliminate the badly beaten Zexion, who had faced off against the real thing and lost.
Back at the World That Never Was, Roxas had befriended Xion and heard from the other members that everyone at Oblivion had been eliminated. Axel laid low for several days, but when he finally did return he confirmed with Saïx that Vexen and Zexion were dead and that Marluxia had been a traitor. Then he and Roxas and Xion were free to indulge in day after day of ice cream on the clock tower post mission, except Xion started struggling. At first she couldn’t summon a Keyblade, and then she lost the ability after a fateful encounter with Riku. She continued to lose consciousness and falter in her abilities, and the entire situation grew worse and worse, especially once the façade she and Roxas set up for joint heart collection failed. But finally she seemed to get a handle on it, and as Xion grew stronger, Roxas grew weaker. Questions pestered Axel from both of them, and most of them he either couldn’t answer or didn’t know how to. Ultimately, Xion learned the truth from Castle Oblivion, and Axel learned it from Saïx; Xion was nothing more than a replica herself, a doll created to possess Sora’s memories and wield his power. Now she was siphoning it from Roxas, and it was going to destroy him. The only alternative was to destroy Xion. Explaining this to Roxas was impossible, though, and when Axel tried it only made him run away. Xion was already gone by then, seduced by promises from Riku of completing herself and the persistent feeling that nothing about her own existence was right or made any sense.
Roxas fell into the hands of Riku and DiZ, as another piece of the puzzle necessary to complete Sora, but not before he defeated a Xion determined to absorb him. Because she was only a collection of memories, Xion’s death meant that she would not be remembered by anyone. Roxas’s defeat meant that his memories were as scattered as Sora’s, as Naminé erased everything from the Organization and replaced it with shadows of a life in the data Twilight Town that DiZ had created. The Organization found a way to get Nobodies inside, only Dusks at first, but eventually Axel was sent in to collect Roxas--and if he couldn’t, to destroy him. His first attempt met with failure on both accounts: he encountered Roxas at the Struggle tournament, and when Axel cut straight to the chase, Roxas was hesitant. Axel attacked him, determined to knock him unconscious and take him by force. But DiZ interfered, knocking Axel out of the simulation. He got in a second time, this time bent on destroying Roxas, only for time to pause at DiZ’s command and Roxas to escape to the old mansion. Axel realized then that the Roxas he’d known was gone, but he still had orders and kept up the pursuit, cornering his former best friend in the basement of the mansion and engaging him in a firestorm of a battle that ended with Axel’s defeat and capture. DiZ ordered Riku to dispose of both Axel and Naminé, but instead Riku delivered Naminé into Axel’s care and allowed them both to escape Twilight Town.
From there, there was no Roxas. Axel went to Destiny Islands at Naminé’s request in order to get Kairi involved. He tried to get her to come with him because he knew Sora, but she wouldn’t trust him. Axel nonetheless chased her to Twilight Town, where Hayner’s gang was unable to protect her from him and he dragged her away, only to be intercepted by Saïx. Axel was already in trouble with the Organization for failing to eliminate Roxas, and kidnapping Kairi was just another crime to add to the list, so he had to run. He encountered Sora at Hollow Bastion, trying to warn him about the Organization’s plans for him, but Saïx foiled him there, too, and Axel fled. The last time he saw Sora was in the void between the data Twilight Town and the World That Never Was; Naminé was on her own and Kairi was in Organization hands, so Axel was dealing with the constant attacks from the Nobodies he once commanded by himself. He and Sora joined forces to clear the path, which was what Axel had been trying to do before Sora showed, and when it didn’t look like they were going to manage it in the space of another few minutes Axel sacrificed himself in a blazing human fireball. It got rid of the Dusks, but it unfortunately also got rid of Axel. Sora knelt beside him in his last moments, and Axel confided that he’d come to see Roxas, if he could, and that he regretted manhandling Kairi. Axel faded away, but he got his wish, because as soon as Sora defeated Roxas, that consciousness met with Axel’s one last time on the clock tower at Twilight Town.
Other: As traveling companions go, Axel's a bit of a lone wolf lately, but he encountered a fiery young blonde by the name of Kid (Chrono Cross) when she decided to try and pickpocket him. That endeavor didn't work out so well for her, but after a literal firefight ended in a stalemate, they took a mutual interest and started traveling together on and off (which to Axel means "Kid being loud and annoying as hell," and to Kid means "Axel ditchin' me right when I need his arse.")
