Axel found himself drawn to debauchery. He was attracted to the sticky atmosphere of the tavern, the slosh and plunk of rum against thick glass, raucous voices blaring drunkenly in song or rising tones of anger, like a moth to a flame. But it wasn't because Axel found something endearing about the half-asleep boor sitting in the corner mumbling ruined words or the ugly one beating the other ugly one into an even uglier mess. On the contrary; if he'd had a heart, these men would disgust him. But as friends with Roxas, Axel had come close to something human. He wondered about that, still. And having seen humanity at its best in Sora, he wondered about it at its worst.
In a twisted way, Axel wondered if the Organization could ever be like this. Wild with abandon, completely overtaken by mindless self-indulgence, destroying themselves in the name of their insatiable hearts...
Comforting thought.
Not that Axel would be joining them. He'd woken up between, or what was left of between, after having every intention to die on the battlefield. And that had been great. In the same way waking up on Christmas day and finding out your entire house had burned down in the night would be great. On the one hand, Axel was alive. Broken and heartless, but alive. Merry Christmas. On the other, what could he do now?
Running from the Organization had seemed like a good idea. All he knew about Roxas was that the boy had reunited with Sora, and when he left the Organization Xemnas, Xigbar, Xaldin, Saïx, and Luxord had all still been around. That was quite a death toll if Sora had really succeeded, and Axel believed in the kid, but he was also a realist. Chances were, Sora had perished, and what remained of the Organization was still on the loose. Like always, Axel would have to run.
Oblivious to the antics of the pirates and lowlifes around him, the hooded figure raised his tankard to the moon in a vaguely sarcastic gesture. "To a world that never was," he murmured faintly, "and a friend who never will be."
